The B visa is a visitor’s visa and three elements must be present for issuance at a consulate:
-
A foreign residence the alien intends to maintain;
-
A temporary visit; and
-
A mission on business (B-1) or pleasure (B-2).
By State Department definition, the B-1 classification refers to conventions, conferences,
consultations and other legitimate activities of a commercial or professional nature. It does
not involve local employment or labor for hire. However, in limited circumstances, B-1 visa holders
may be authorized for employment, please contact us
for further information.
The State Department defines the B-2 classification as legitimate activities of a recreational
character, including tourism, amusement, visits with friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment,
and activities of a fraternal, social or service nature. Such activities include participation in
conferences with fraternal, social or services organizations.
B visas are generally issued from 3 to 6 months and extensions may be obtained through the nearest
Service Center. Timely filing (either before or on the date of expiration) is essential to ensure
maintenance of valid visa status.
